Mother Love

Description

My latest piece of art is probably the most detailed piece I've ever done. It's my first real attempt at using tonal values to represent edges rather than black lines.

I'm fairly happy with it but a few things hindered this from being better. Things like using textured paper (not good for achieving smooth shading) and the mother and daughters' faces are a real disappointment to me. They just look kind of .........ugly and flat.

This took me quite a few hours (10+) using graphite pencils from 2b to 8b. It's a copy of a painting by Walter Langley called 'Mother Love' [link]
The copy that it's from was a very poor quality and very pixelated printout which didn't really show the finer details too well so I had to use a little 'artistic license' in places.

As usual the picture didn't scan too well.

A4 (ish) textured (bad choice) paper.
Graphite pencils: 2b - 8b.
Blending sticks/tortillons
Putty rubber and mystic eraser.

Wow I love this, really caught my eye browsing through some stuff on here! The only thing I'm not to sure on and its just a little thing, is the shadow of the bottles? I don't think the should have any lighting as its giving them dimensions where as a shadow they should just be flat. I dunno I could be wrong i'm no expert lol. Anyway looks awesome!! :D
