A woman's look Pencil Drawing by MattDeakinFineArt A woman's look Pencil Drawing by MattDeakinFineArt
At last!! Finally completed and boy am I glad. Actually, despite this being a huge hurdle for me at times, I feel the hard work has paid off. Okay, so it's not perfect (slight blotchy areas due to overblending etc) but it's certainly the best I could have done.

I'm massively proud of this piece and I definitely feel I gave it all the love and attention that the reference photo demanded.

Many people commented on how her iris's seemed too small and the whites of her eys too white in the WIP's leading up to the finished piece and so hopefully I've adjusted them enough to get it right......finally. Let me know what you think.

Massive thanks has to go to :icondarnara-stock: who gave me permission to use her stock image as reference. The reference photo had everything I needed for my first real portrait attempt. The contrast and subtlety of the lighting, together with quite challenging hair, out of focus areas and the sheer beauty of the woman in this pic and her coy look is just perfect.

Materials:

2b - 8b solid graphite pencils

Electric eraser and putty eraser

Make-up remover pads for the blending

Bristol smooth board

I'll say thanks now to anyone who comments and/or fav's this piece as I don't have much time to reply to every comment these days o thanks in advance.

This is absolutely incredible work. I know that you have worked a long time on it and your time and effort really show. This is truly amazing work . The texture in the hair and the skin is wonderful and the face turned out perfect.

You seem to have fixed the errors that were found in the work in progress. I love how the eyes turned out, as well as the earrings. These little details really make it look like a photograph. I also think that you captured the depth of field well. This is truly outstanding work, Dez! I wish I could draw this well in pencil! :3

I'm so excited to see the completion of your hard work, you should absolutely be proud of this piece! I can't believe this is your first portrait!

The first thing I notice is the way you accurately captured the focus of the piece, the earrings and hair in the background look fantastic. I just can't get enough of the earrings!

The face is also done with expert precision, the features are especially striking. The highlights on the nose and lips are so soft, real, and lovely. I think you corrected any proportion issues with the eyes, but I think the eyeliner could be darker. In the reference the the darkest values can be seen around the eyes, and it would really make the eyes pop if they had that contrast. I thought at first that it might be the fault of the scanner, but I can see some darker values in the hair that are darker than the eyes.

The only other little thing I noticed is the forehead area above the right eyebrow, it looks a bit flatter than the rest of the face.

Enough nitpicking though! This is a beautiful portrait, and I hope it won't be your last, I can't wait to see what you do next!

I really enjoy the way you've captured the focus of the image... the fuzzy locks of hair to the left and bottom of the image against the sharply in focus face really stands out!
My only wish for stunning work like this is that photographs didn't so terribly flatten the human face... it makes the resulting drawing, when drawn to complement the photograph, look less realistic.

Wow, excellent work.

Her neck/shoulder area is a touch confusing to my eye, but that might be just me, and/or that's just how the photo looks.

Your drawings have a hyper-real look to them, which keep them slightly behind the world's best pencil artists, but as a first portrait this is an incredible achievement and you can only get better.

it is SERIOUSLY awesome - and i don't see any splotches! i know what you mean though, my last pic i tried to blend certain areas more than they were, and i just couldn't get them to smooth out and 'unline'. it was very very frustrating!

Her lips and her nose seem a little bit off to me. I don't know. Other than that, this picture is absolutely amazing and I love the shading!

Wow! She looks beautiful! I like the composition with her face filling the page at an interesting angle. The cropping you used brings the viewer in close. Your proportions look good. Love the texture in the hair. You have a good range of values here. And good use of value changes to show the planes and contours of the face with great transitions between them. It's a sterling piece of work!

Thank you for your comments but I can't take credit for the composition as that is down to the person who took the original photo which I then drew from.

brilliant portrait mate. well done. i love the hair and the eyes. i would like to suggest maybe you could do a little more on the eyes to bring them out even further as i think u are slightly drawn a little more to the wonderful hair you have done.

i have to say that what really adds to the realism of this piece are the grainy texture on her skin, especially on her shoulder, as well as the fact that her earrings are a bit blurry, like in a photo where the focus is not on them, but on the model's face.
very good transposing skills, from a photo to traditional media
